CFSA’s Professionalism Recognized with a Prestigious CAJPA Accreditation with Excellence
Brian Davie, CFSA’s executive director, announced that CFSA hasreceived a “Certificate of Accreditation with Excellence” from the California Association of Joint Powers Authorities (CAJPA). The purpose of CAJPA’s accreditation program is to recognize self-insurance pools that meet the association’s comprehensive qualifications. Especially noteworthy is the Excellence rating indicating CFSA consistently exceeds CAJPA’s high performance and operational standards in all areas of business. Next time you’re in the CFSA office, take a look at the certificate hanging on the lobby wall.
The accreditation comes after more than three months of indepth review of CFSA’s operations and performance by a CAJPA consultant and the CAJPA board of directors.
CFSA appplied for the accreditation for a number of reasons, including to measure the effectiveness of its services and programs, to build the fair industry’s confidence in CFSA’s risk-sharing pools and operations, to assure CFSA’s board the agency is operating at a professional level with proper diligence, and to address the concerns of state regulators and legislators that California’s JPAs are professionally managed, financially secure and self-regulating.
| Holiday Happenings Keep Fairgrounds Hopping |
Larry Ford, CEO of Redwood Acres Fair, tells us in addition to a well attended craft show, they also hold the KEKA-sponsored Lighted Truck Parade. Attracting 18-wheelers from northern California and southern Oregon, this annual truck parade through downtown Eureka and the fairgrounds has become a major holiday event for the community.
The Del Mar Fair, Marcia Harlan tells us, has revived the Holiday Faire, complete with snow rides, crafts and food.
And how about a combo livestock and craft show? That's what Kern County Fair has with its Holiday Classic Junior Steer and Heifer Show.
And fairgrounds north and south are proving to be the ideal setting for the drivethrough "Festival of Lights", currently brightening up the night at Cal Expo and the Del Mar Fair.
This is also the time of year when many fairgrounds become key players in community service. According to Sue Houser of the Monterey County Fairgrounds, free Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners are served there to 3,500 people. The food and services are donated by local businesses and individuals. The staff at Monterey County Fair sponsors a needy family for Christmas, providing the family with gifts, a decorated tree and dinner on Christmas Eve.
At the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds, the Salvation Army conducts a "Christmas Blitz" to help needy families with food baskets and toys. Randy Hatfield, CEO of Del Norte County Fair, and John Kegebein, CEO of Santa Cruz County Fair, both report that their fairgrounds hold holiday craft shows run by local clubs and schools to raise money for the needy in their communities. CalExpo, in Sacramento, in partnership with a local TV station, co-hosts "Coats for Kids", while fairground employees continue a holiday tradition of participating in the State Employees Food Drive.
